The way Black Sabbath guitarist remembers it, the Dio era got off to a rough start. The band was on the road to support the Heaven and Hell album one night when they discovered that drummer Bill Ward was nowhere to be found.

"We were in Denver or somewhere like that, and we were due to go onstage in a couple of hours. Somebody said, 'oh Bill was left, Bill's gone.' Like what? He'd just gotten in his bus and went. It was panic stations, it really was. Of course we had to cancel the show, and we had to try and find another drummer."

This abrupt change in Black Sabbath's rhythm section is what led the group to recruit drummer Vinny Appice, at the urging of Dio. This is just one of the wild stories that Iommi recounts with host Rich Mahan as he discusses the band's legendary history, with a focus this episode on Sabbath's Dio years.
