It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we?

•    The Donnas, “Dancing with Myself” (2004): This all-girl punk group delivered their take on this Billy Idol classic for the soundtrack of Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girls, and if there’s any question as to how strong the studio thought the version was, it leads off the soundtrack album. A well-earned position, for sure.

•    Kate Walsh, “Beetlebum” (2010): You have to give this UK vocalist credit for having great taste in covers as well as a gift for picking some unlikely choices. For her PEPPERMINT RADIO album, Walsh tackled not only Blur but also EMF, Prefab Sprout, Radiohead, Duran Duran, The Sundays, and even The Shamen!

•    The Futureheads, “Hounds of Love” (2003): These post-punk powerhouses made a big splash with their 2004 debut album through the inclusion of an unexpected Kate Bush cover, but rest assured that their originals are easily as memorably catchy.

•    Carolina Chocolate Drops, “Hit ‘Em Up Style” (2010): Anyone who claims to have expected to someday hear a bluegrass version of this Blu Cantrell R&B dancefloor filler is clearly lying, but we’re glad that it’s true that it actually came to pass, because this’ll get you moving almost as quickly as the original.
